About Maewang Elephant Sanctuary

Established in 1996 by the Chailert family, Maewang Elephant Sanctuary was founded in response to the displacement of elephants following Thailand’s logging ban. Many elephants were left without shelter or work and were forced into urban street labor. The sanctuary was created to provide a safe, natural, and nurturing environment for these elephants, promoting ethical tourism and long-term conservation.

In 2009, the sanctuary expanded to include a free elephant clinic providing essential medical care to elephants in the region. Staffed by full-time veterinarians and experienced mahouts, the clinic is funded through sanctuary revenues and the sale of elephant-created artwork.
